Journeyman Vagabond Gadabout, Poems by Matt Phillips

The poems in Matt Phillips' collection offer a spirited journey through the American experience, where we meet misfits, dilapidated landscapes, and the heart of our common life.

Sample Poems by Matt Phillips

"A rockabilly road trip through a mythic desert landscape, complete with reoccurring reverb twang, and Phillips bends all the right notes; the shiver-shudder of a hot breeze as it blows through a row of fan palms, a late-night cup of coffee in a Denny's, a cigarette next to an abandoned gas station. Racousness is often followed by a deep high desert hush. Think American Graffiti meets Reverend Horton Heat meets Edward Hopper. There's a lowbrow SoCal imagism at work in these poems, graceful elegance mixed with gutter eloquence ... So be careful, this can be a rough stretch of highway: one poem might hold a switchblade to your throat while another digs through your pockets." - Steve Lambert, author of Heat Seekers

Matt Phillips lives in San Diego. He earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Texas-El Paso and studied writing pedagogy at Antioch University-Los Angeles. He has also written the acclaimed crimenovels Countdown, Know Me fiom Smoke, and Three Kinds of Fool.
